Today, the Saline di Volterra hosted a special stop of the “Treno del Sale” — the “Salt Train” — an initiative organized by the Italian State Railways aimed at highlighting the region’s excellence and its heritage.
A journey that brought nearly 500 visitors to discover the fascinating world of Volterra’s salt: a place where industrial culture, iconic architecture, and a one-of-a-kind production chain come together.
The arrival of the train from Livorno marked the beginning of an immersive experience at the heart of the saltworks. Guests were welcomed into the production areas and witnessed a historical reenactment of the traditional salt weighing inside the renowned Padiglione Nervi, a monumental building designed by Pier Luigi Nervi and a longstanding symbol of modern Italian industrial architecture.
The performance — brought to life by actors in period costumes — recreated the precise and ritual gestures that once paced daily work in the saltworks, reminding everyone that salt is far more than a commodity: it is a cultural heritage deeply rooted in our identity.
The program continued with a guided tour of the facilities. Visitors had the opportunity to see firsthand the modern technologies used for extracting and processing rock salt — the result of centuries of knowledge, ingenuity, and care for this precious natural resource.
A journey through time that brings together:
- the millennia-long history of salt in Volterra, from Etruscan salt basins to modern industry;
- a constant focus on product quality;
- the protection of a unique landscape where environment and culture merge.
The day concluded with a tasting of salt-infused beer, a product that embodies the innovative spirit of the Saline — tradition evolving through new ways of enhancing and experiencing our salt.
Everyone had the chance to discover salt as an element of identity, not just as an essential ingredient on every table.
An event that opens new horizons
