Two days to discover the factory of the purest salt in Italy, between industrial archaeology and three thousand years of history
On 26 and 27 September, the Saline di Volterra open their doors for the European Heritage Days, the event promoted by the Council of Europe and the European Commission and coordinated in Italy by the Ministry of Culture. A weekend of guided tours to bring visitors up close to a place that has been producing salt for more than three thousand years.
A journey spanning three thousand years
The tour traces the full arc of Volterra's salt: from its working in the Etruscan-Roman era to the first nucleus of an industrial village established under the Grand Duke of Tuscany, through to the State Monopoly and the iconic Pavilion designed by Pier Luigi Nervi, where visitors can admire the spectacular salt cascade.
It is the story of a partnership between craft knowledge and technology that keeps evolving — a path stretching across centuries that has brought the product to its current purity of 99.99%.
Practical information
Tours run on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September, with departures at:
- morning — 10:00, 11:00, 12:00
- afternoon — 14:00, 15:00, 16:00, 17:00
Full ticket 7 euros; reduced 5 euros for children aged 5 to 14; free for children up to 4 and for visitors with disabilities. The ticket is paid at the end of the tour.
